This is our 11th “Art Making Workshop” in Chuo City Marugoto Museum.

Japanese chef turned self-taught artist, HIROYUKI DOI draws many small circles on washi, Japanese handmade paper to create his mesmerizing Circle Drawings. Through his artworks, DOI tries to express human dialog, the co-existence of living creatures, the soul and peace.

Since 2001 when his artworks were shown at the Outsider Art Fair in New York, he has received critical recognition in the US, Europe, Australia and Japan. HIROYUKI DOI’s artworks were exhibited at American Folk Art Museum (New York), Halle Saint Pierre (Paris), La Maison Rouge (Paris), the Museum of Everything (London, Torino, Paris, Hobart), Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center, Vassar College (Poughkeepsie), Pen Station Museum (Tokyo), Intuit: the Center for Intuitive and Outsider Art (Chicago), the Menil Collection (Houston), the John Michael Kohler Arts Center (Sheboygan), Collection de l’Art Brut (Lausanne), Tokyo Shibuya Koen-dori Gallery (Tokyo), Cincinnati Art Museum (Cincinnati) and auctioned at Christie’s New York.

Roberta Smith (2002) of The New York Times says, “ …They are delicate, mesmerizing and unusually beautiful…” on Hiroyuki Doi’s artworks.

In our workshop, participants see HIROYUKI DOI’s artworks, express their impressions of DOI's art, ask him questions, then observe how DOI creates small circles on washi and create their own artworks using the same pen and washi DOI uses.
Finally, participants share each other’s artworks and express their own art making processes freely.

A short film, “HIROYUKI DOI: The World of Circles” shows how DOI creates his artworks and also his recent artworks. https://youtu.be/yfbXr8dGgIU
