This is our eighth “Art Making Workshop” in Chuo City Marugoto Museum.
Chef turned self-taught artist HIROYUKI DOI draws many small circles on washi to create his unique artworks. Through his artworks, DOI tries to express dialog, peace, the co-existence of living creatures and the soul.
Since 2001 when his artworks were shown at the Outsider Art Fair in New York, he has received critical recognition in the US and Europe. HIROYUKI DOI’s artworks were exhibited at American Folk Art Museum (New York), Halle Saint Pierre (Paris), La Maison Rouge (Paris), the Museum of Everything (London, Torino, Paris, Hobart), Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center, Vassar College (Poughkeepsie), Pen Station Museum (Tokyo), the Center for Intuitive and Outsider Art (Chicago), the Menil Collection (Houston), the John Michael Kohler Arts Center (Sheboygan), Collection de l’Art Brut (Lausanne) and other venues around the world.
Roberta Smith (2002) of The New York Times says, “ …They are delicate, mesmerizing and unusually beautiful…” on Hiroyuki Doi’s artworks.

In our workshop, first, participants see artist, HIROYUKI DOI’s artworks, then observe how DOI creates small circles on washi, ask him questions, and create their own artworks using the same pen and washi DOI uses.
Finally, participants share each other’s artworks, express their own art making process freely.
A short film, “HIROYUKI DOI: The World of Circles” shows how DOI creates his artworks. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ls3SaxeS0C8
